Handling Objections

Respond to customer concerns clearly and responsibly. Configure automated responses with a practical framework and customizable industry examples.

The The LAER Framework

A practical structure for responding to common objections. Train your AI to follow this structure:

L

Listen

Let the lead fully express their concern without interrupting

Example:

Lead: 'This seems really expensive for what it is.' You: [Nods, lets them continue]

A

Acknowledge

Validate their feeling - don't dismiss or minimize

Example:

'I completely understand - this is a significant investment and you want to make sure you're getting value.'

E

Explore

Ask questions to understand the real underlying concern

Example:

'Can you help me understand what you're comparing this to?' or 'What would make this feel like the right value for you?'

R

Respond

Address the concern with specific information and pivot to value

Example:

'Based on what you've shared, here's what I'd recommend... [Specific solution tailored to their concern]'

Industry-Specific Examples

These fictional templates demonstrate response structure. Replace every bracketed field with current, verified information from your business before use.

Use verified business facts only

Never invent customer results, inventory, deadlines, discounts, credentials, availability, coverage, success rates, or competitor details. Connect responses to an approved data source or replace placeholders manually. If a fact cannot be verified at response time, omit it or route the conversation to a qualified person.

Real Estate

The price is too high

Illustrative template — customize before use

I understand — buying a home is a significant investment. Would it help to compare the asking price with [verified recent comparable sales]? I can also explain [verified property features or costs] so you can decide whether the value fits your priorities.

Why it works: Acknowledges the concern, offers relevant evidence, and lets the buyer decide without manufactured urgency

I need to sell my current home first

Illustrative template — customize before use

That makes sense. Have you received a current market analysis for your home? If this seller has confirmed that they accept contingent offers, I can explain those terms. I can also connect you with [verified team member or service] to discuss coordinating the two transactions.

Why it works: Validates the concern and offers practical next steps without assuming seller terms or inventing sales history

The house needs too many repairs

Illustrative template — customize before use

I hear you — a repair list can feel overwhelming. The disclosure identifies [verified condition or age of major systems], but an independent inspection is the best way to assess the work. Would you like contact information for [verified inspector or contractor] so you can request estimates before deciding?

Why it works: Takes the concern seriously, distinguishes disclosed facts from expert evaluation, and offers a concrete next step

Automotive

I'm just looking, not buying today

Illustrative template — customize before use

Absolutely — take the time you need. I can answer questions while you compare options. If it helps, I can share the vehicle's [verified price, availability, and current manufacturer offer]. Would you like those details by email or text?

Why it works: Removes pressure and offers useful, current information without inventing demand or a deadline

Your competitor has a lower price

Illustrative template — customize before use

Thanks for sharing that. Do you have the competitor's out-the-door quote and included options? I can compare it with our verified price, fees, warranty, and included services so you can evaluate the same items side by side.

Why it works: Asks for comparable facts and shifts the discussion to transparent total cost without disparaging a competitor

The monthly payment is too high

Illustrative template — customize before use

I understand — the payment needs to fit your budget. Would you like to review options using [verified vehicle price], [available term], [approved rate], and [down payment]? We can compare the total cost as well as the monthly payment before you choose.

Why it works: Acknowledges the budget constraint and offers a transparent comparison based on confirmed financing inputs

SaaS / Software

We're already using a competitor

Illustrative template — customize before use

That makes sense. What prompted you to explore alternatives? Based on your answer, I can compare [verified feature or service difference] and explain our documented migration process, including [supported data] and [typical or guaranteed timeline, if verified].

Why it works: Explores the underlying need before presenting only documented product and migration differences

The price is more than we budgeted

Illustrative template — customize before use

I understand. Which part of the budget is the main constraint? We can compare the plan's verified cost with the time your team currently spends on [relevant task]. If you share your own volume and labor-cost assumptions, we can build an estimate for you to review.

Why it works: Uses the prospect's own inputs for an explicit estimate instead of presenting invented ROI as a customer result

We need to get buy-in from the team

Illustrative template — customize before use

That makes sense — the people using the tool should evaluate it. We can provide [verified trial or demo terms] and a summary of [verified features, pricing, security, and implementation requirements]. Who should be involved in the evaluation?

Why it works: Supports a shared evaluation while limiting the offer and supporting material to what the business actually provides

Healthcare

My insurance doesn't cover this

Illustrative template — customize before use

I understand — coverage can be difficult to confirm. I can't determine your benefits in chat. Our [verified billing or insurance contact] can help you verify network status and authorization requirements with your insurer. Would you like their contact details or a callback during [verified service hours]?

Why it works: Acknowledges the concern, avoids promising coverage, and routes the patient to an appropriate verified resource

I'm not sure I need this procedure

Illustrative template — customize before use

That's a reasonable question, and the chatbot can't advise whether a procedure is medically necessary. Please discuss the recommendation, alternatives, benefits, and risks with a licensed clinician. If the practice offers it, I can help you request [verified follow-up or second-opinion option].

Why it works: Respects the patient's concern, avoids medical advice, and directs the decision to a qualified clinician

I found a cheaper option online

Illustrative template — customize before use

I understand that cost matters. To compare options, ask each provider for a written estimate showing [verified included services and possible additional charges]. I can share our documented pricing information and direct you to [verified provider credentials or published outcomes] if available.

Why it works: Encourages an informed comparison using documented pricing and credentials without inventing outcomes

Insurance

I need to compare quotes from other companies

Illustrative template — customize before use

Absolutely. When comparing quotes, review the same coverage limits, exclusions, deductibles, and policy terms. I can send [verified comparison resource] and explain what is included in this quote. Please review the policy documents or speak with a licensed agent before deciding.

Why it works: Supports comparison, focuses on documented policy terms, and directs the buyer to licensed advice

I've never had a claim, so insurance feels like a waste

Illustrative template — customize before use

I understand why it can feel that way when you haven't filed a claim. Insurance transfers specific risks subject to the policy's limits and exclusions. Would you like a licensed agent to explain the covered risks and use [verified, approved claims example or published data] to illustrate them?

Why it works: Explains the purpose of insurance without inventing claim amounts, customer stories, or satisfaction rates

The deductible is too high

Illustrative template — customize before use

That's a valid concern. I can show the available deductible and premium combinations from your verified quote so you can compare them. A licensed agent can also explain how each option applies and whether it can be changed later under the policy terms.

Why it works: Offers a factual comparison without inventing prices or giving personalized financial advice

Click Add Objection and configure:

Trigger Phrases (optional)

Comma-separated phrases that activate this playbook instantly (case-insensitive). Examples: “too expensive”, “need to think about it”, “talking to other companies”. Leave blank to rely on AI auto-detection.

Response (LAER Format)

Write a response following the Listen-Acknowledge-Explore-Respond framework above

Category

Built-in types: price, timing, authority, competition, need, trust, or other. You can also enter a custom type (lowercase letters, numbers, underscores). Multiple playbooks per type act as variations - the AI picks randomly for natural variety.

3

Test and Refine

After saving, test your objection handling by chatting with your widget. Type the trigger phrase and see how the AI responds. Refine based on what sounds natural.

Objection Response Best Practices

Do

  • Always acknowledge before defending
  • Use specific numbers only when they are current and verifiable
  • Use customer stories only with permission and accurate context
  • End with an open-ended question to continue dialogue
  • Keep responses conversational, not scripted
  • Use the lead's name if you know it

Don't

  • Argue or tell the lead they're wrong
  • Use generic 'one size fits all' responses
  • Pressure a lead to continue after they decline
  • Use pushy or high-pressure language
  • Make promises you can't keep
  • Invent urgency, scarcity, customer results, or credentials
  • Dismiss their concerns as unimportant

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Responding too quickly without exploring

The "price is too high" objection might really be about budget, value perception, or comparing to a different solution. Always explore before responding with your standard price justification.

Making responses too long

Keep AI responses under 100 words. Long responses feel scripted and overwhelm the lead. Better to acknowledge, give one key point, and ask a question.

Not having enough variety

If every objection about price gets the exact same response, it feels robotic. Create 2-3 variations for common objections so responses feel natural.
